While one sponsor after another is deserting the floundering Tiger Woods ship, Nike are standing firm and say his problems are part of the game.

Phil Knight, the chairman and co-founder of Nike, has told Reuters that scandals of the kind that have engulfed Woods in recent weeks are "part of the game when it comes to the commercial endorsements we sign with athletes".

Knight said the company had carried out background checks on Woods before signing its deal, and the golfer "came out clean".

"I think he's been really great," Knight said in another interview published on Monday by Street & Smith's SportsBusiness Journal.

"The media is making a big deal out of it right now, but when Tiger's career is over, you'll look back on these indiscretions as a minor blip."
